Bessie Sullivan County Librarian Libraries in Canada continue to evolve and thrive because they recognise the need to adapt services as times change. DVDs as lending materials in libraries has come under some question lately in relation to budget cuts in Toronto. The question being asked is: should libraries stick to the traditional printed books? The Toronto Public Library CEO points out that telling stories has changed over time and that we have to get away from focusing on the container the story is housed in, whether it be a printed book, an audio recording, or indeed a movie. Storytelling began in the oral tradition before we had literate societies eventually evolving into words recorded on the printed page. Turning a story into film takes things one step further with both an audio and visual component. Many movies are adapted from books and often people like to consume both. Some libraries include the DVD with their book club sets to enhance the reader experience. There have been a few times for me where the movie really helped me to understand the book better.
